Stepping Back in Time: The Magic of Al-Nofara Coffeehouse in Damascus

If the stones of Old Damascus could speak, they would likely whisper the stories told within the walls of Al-Nofara Coffeehouse

What to expect?

Al-Nofara Coffeehouse. More than just a place to grab a drink, Al-Nofara is a living museum, a social hub, and a witness to over 500 years of Syrian history.
As the oldest operating cafe in the capital, Al-Nofara offers travelers an authentic slice of Damascene life that hasn't changed much since the Middle Ages.

The Story Behind the Name

The name "Al-Nofara" translates to "The Fountain." It was named after a majestic fountain that once leaped 4 to 5 meters high in a nearby pool. While the "Yazid River" that fed it stopped flowing about 50 years ago, the name remains a tribute to the refreshing spirit the cafe has always provided to weary travelers and locals alike.

A Prime Location in the Heart of History

Perched perfectly behind the southern entrance of the iconic Umayyad Mosque, Al-Nofara sits at a crossroads. Its location is legendary; almost every winding alley of the Old City eventually branches out from this very spot.
The cafe itself is split into two charming sections:
• The Indoor Hall: A cozy 60-square-meter space housing 24 tables, perfect for groups sharing stories.
• The Outdoor Terrace: A 30-square-meter area where 12 individual tables sit on black basalt stones. It is the ultimate spot for people-watching and soaking in the ancient atmosphere.

Neighbors of Kings and Caliphs

Right next to the cafe lies the Dar al-Nofara, a historic residence from which the Umayyad dynasty once governed. Legend has it that the "Fifth Rightly Guided Caliph," Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, stayed in a room there—an inscription marking his presence still exists behind its currently closed doors.
The Last Home of the Hakawati (The Storyteller)
While most modern cafes replaced tradition with television screens in the 1960s, Al-Nofara refused to let go of its soul. It remains one of the few places on Earth where you can still experience the Hakawati.
Dressed in traditional Syrian attire, the storyteller sits on a high wooden chair, wielding a sword or a stick to emphasize the epic tales of heroes like Antara Ibn Shaddad. Even if you don't speak Arabic, the rhythm of his voice and the rapt silence of the crowd create an unforgettable cultural experience.

Why You Must Visit

Whether you are resting your feet after exploring the Umayyad Mosque or looking for a place to enjoy a traditional tea under the shadow of history, Al-Nofara is the heartbeat of Damascus. It is a place where time slows down, and every sip of coffee feels like a connection to the centuries of souls who sat there before you.
Planning a trip to Syria? Make sure Al-Nofara is at the top of your Damascus itinerary. It’s not just a visit; it’s a homecoming to the roots of Levantine hospitality.
